There are many locations that house Red Ruffed Lemurs outside of their limited natural habitat of Madagascar. Due to the extremely small region of their natural habitat and the mass distruction of their only home, many Red Ruffed Lemurs have been taken from the wild to be protected in almost all major AZA accredited zoos in the United States and many primate/lemur reserves to ensure the species survival.

Because the Red Ruffed Lemur do have particularly large broods of offspring for a primate, they breed well in captivity. Due to that the mortality rate of young lemurs has dropped in captivity and has made for many successful breeding programs through zoos and reserves.
